Jesus Christ was on the way to Jerusalem. The gospel of Mark shows us the life of Jesus, first in Galilee, then on the way to Jerusalem, and finally in Jerusalem, where he was crucified and where he rose of the dead. In the sense of ordinary human thinking it was a constant loss of reputation in society. It seemed that more and more people rejected the ideas of Jesus. The pharisees, the people who listened to His preaching and ate from the fish and the bread, even his disciples didn’t properly understand Him. Some even opposed Him and wanted His death.

But at the same time Jesus revealed his own mission. He showed people what it means to be God’s disciple. It is trusting in God like a child trusts in his parents. It is not looking for a high position, but helping each other. This is why Jesus says, “Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.” (Mk 10,43-44)

Today’s gospel tells us about a man, who sincerely wanted to achieve eternal life. Jesus knew that he was a deeply believing person. The man confirmed that he was living according to God’s commandments. But Jesus wanted him to be perfect as God is perfect.

Getting to eternal life means following the example of Jesus. What is His example? What did Jesus do that we could live according to His example?

Jesus loved God and therefore He gave all He had to God. He didn’t give it to the priests or to other people. He gave all He had to God. His biggest treasury was His own life. He was rich because He was living. Let us look on ourselves. What is the most precious we have? It is our friends, our family, our own life, but also the money which we need for living.

“Jesus, looking [at the man], loved him and said to him, ‘You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to (the) poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’” (Mk 10,21)

Yesterday I heard of a Latvian woman who made a decision in her life though others were against it. It is the great-grandmother of a friend of mine. She married the man who she loved, though her father expelled her from her family and deprived her of the heritage. She decided to live with her beloved husband, but without the money of her family. And she lived poor in a farmer’s family 30 km outside of Riga. What was most important for her? It was her love to her husband.

Jesus explains to us that most important for a disciple of God is to love his Creator. It makes him happy. It is the key to eternal life. Nothing is so important as the love to God so that a disciple would give everything for it. At the same time all persons, all things around us, all what is happening in our life becomes important because we love God. Amen.
